Six days afloat everglades9/18/2023 ![]() ![]() If you are a sportsman, you can take a moment to throw a line in the flats and try your luck with game fish, such as the tarpon. Once you set camp among the swaying palm trees, hidden behind the scrambling shrubs of the coin vine, you are left with only time to fill. The possibilities that wait are endless, with choices abound. For the twisted-mind folk, like me, a fleeting thought of claimed land rights runs through your mind as if you landed on the moon itself. You feel the soft crystals of pristine white sand between your toes, then realize your footprints are the only visible disruptions upon the beach. A warm gulf breeze swoops across the island, cooling the hard-earned sweat beading down your salt-caked body. The work is done and a feeling of gratification brings a smile upon your salty, sunburned face.Īfter catching your breath, the moment begins to sink in. Muscle memory kicks in as you grab the nylon tow cord and give it a good heave to secure your vessel. While stepping aground, your foot sinks slightly into the cool, salt-soaked sand, freeing small bubbles into the atmosphere. Following quickly with your right, you are now equally balanced and begin to shuffle toward the blank canvas. Your foot breaks the plane and splashes into the rippled sand below. You lift your left knee out of the boat to catch your balance before the crashing waves pull your aft sideways. Your paddle interrupts a school of bait fish skimming the water below the nose of your kayak runs aground, cutting a small notch onto the unscathed beach. You approach a sliver of dampened sand smoothed over by the gently crashing waves. Imagine paddling to a small plot of land isolated and surrounded by the warm, emerald waters of the Gulf of Mexico. ![]()
